Sarah Kahlden was born in
Smithville. She lost her hearing as a child and for a time
attended the Texas School for the Deaf. She attended the Museum
Art School of the Museum Fine Arts, Houston. She exhibited with
Texas Fine Arts Association and in Houston and Texas in the 1920
through the 1940s. She was a talented watercolorist and
illustrator. She was to illustrate the books of Robert Vines,
i.e. Trees , Shrubs and Woody Vines of the Southwest
(1960) and Native East Texas Trees (1953). Both books
contained thousands of botanical drawings and brought much
acclaim for her talents.
