Maurine Cantey
studied at the Dallas Art Institute and with George Luks in New
York. She began exhibiting in the mid 1920’s in both New York
and Fort Worth. She specialized in portraits and decorative
figure compositions often on fabric. She won awards in both the
Southern States Art League and Dallas Allied Arts exhibitions in
the 1930’s. She lived for a short time in Pasadena, California
before returning to Texas with her architect husband. Her
paintings continued to win awards including the Texas General
Exhibition of 1949 and the Dallas Allied Arts Exhibition of
1950. Her works are held in prestigious venues including the
Dallas Museum of Fine Art. A multi-talented artist she was
equally adept in printmaking, painted fabric, fine oil paintings
and her uniquely personal portraits.
