Mary
Anita Bonner was born in Louisiana and was living in San Antonio by
1897. Trained in Europe, Woodstock and in California she gained
international attention after study with Édouard Henri Léon in
Paris. This watercolor appears to have been painted with Leon in
Brittany and exhibited in her Paris exhibition of 1926. She was active in San Antonio after her return from Europe
and was to become one of Texas’s most revered artists. Her death
from complications after surgery cut short the meteoric rise of this
exceptional artist.
