Granville T. Bruce,
illustrator, painter, muralist and art instructor, was born in
Nebraska. He studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and the
Leighton School of Art. He came to Texas in 1924 and soon met
Hugo Pohl in San Antonio. They built a joint studio in
Brackenridge Park. He painted and taught art before moving to
Dallas as the staff artist for the Dallas Museum of Natural
History, a position he held till his retirement in 1962. He
supplemented his income creating illustration for books
including Aces Back to Back and cover art and interior
illustrations for Dallas’ "Hollands Magazine". A PWAP artist he
created murals for Sunset High School in Dallas and Corsicana
High School. Another mural is in the Regan Building in Austin.
Six of his Texas mission paintings are in the Texas State
Library. He exhibited in prestigious exhibitions including the
Davis Wildflower Competition in San Antonio in 1929.
