Grace Spaulding John (1890-1972)

Long claimed by Houston as a leading figure in its art history, Grace Spaulding John moved to Beaumont with her family from Vermont in 1903. She was to begin a life long affair with art, her training would span three decades with instructors the like of Emil Bisttram, Guy Pene Dubois, and Daniel Garber. John was a dedicated and talented artist and one of the most cosmopolitan of the early female Texas artists. She kept studios in Texas, California and New York while amassing an impressive body of work while exhibiting in prestigious venues across Texas and the nation.
