Clara Lily Ely was born
in Colorado. She graduated from Texas Christian University and then
traveled to study art in New York before settling in Brownville with
her husband. She became an importance force in the development of
art the lower Rio Grande Valley. She was a painter, watercolorist and
teacher. She was a founder of the Brownsville Art League and became
its first president.
