Charles C. Stewart
Charles Stewart was born in
Toledo, Ohio, in 1922. He studied at the Toledo Art Museum
and after serving in the Army in World War II, went to New York
to study painting and sculpture at the Art Students' League. He
studied painting with Cameron Booth, Byron Browne, Nathaniel
Dirk, Jean Liberti, Nahum Tschacbasov, and Vaclov Vytacil and
graphic arts with Will Barnet and Harry Sternberg. He
studied sculpture with John Hovannes.
Stewart
left New York to visit Mexico City. He stayed in Mexico
for eight months. In 1947 he moved to Taos, New Mexico and
opened a frame shop and studio. He studied at the Taos
Valley Art School under Louis Ribak. In 1949, Stewart
opened his own gallery. He taught painting and sculpture in the
Taos Art Association; at Philbrook Art Center in Tulsa,
Oklahoma; and to private students in Taos.
In 1986, Stewart and his wife
moved to the village of Todos Santos, Baja California Sur,
Mexico. He maintains a studio and gallery there where he
continues to paint and exhibit his work.
